Maria J. Macias

Group Leader, IRB Barcelona

ICREA Research Professor

I graduated in Chemistry in 1989 and obtained the PhD in 1993, in the field of Organic Chemistry and Natural Products (Universidad of Salamanca) under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Grande. In 1993, I moved to the EMBL in Heidelberg with a five-years Post-doctoral research position in the laboratory of Dr. Hartmut Oschkinat .

In 1998, I started my career as an independent scientist, at the EMBL in Heidelberg, thanks to a Staff-Scientist position that I won in a competitive call.

After four years, in 2002, I moved from Heidelberg to Barcelona upon winning an ICREA research professor position and becoming GL of the Macromolecular Assemblies group of the IRB Barcelona, (BIST) where I’ve been working since in the Mechanisms of Disease Programme.

Our long-term aim is to illustrate (with our structures) the complete picture of how full-length Smad proteins transmit TGF-β signaling and regulate gene expression and cell fate. We also aim to determine the probability of relapse and metastasis of gynecological Cancer patients using data from biopsies, data deposited in public data bases and artificial intelligence.

I participate in several activities to promote Gender Equity in Research Centers and to avoid gender bias. I am a founding member of the Gender and Equality committee of the IRB Barcelona. Our missions are to implement and develop Plans and Actions to eradicate gender bias and stop perpetuating gender stereotypes.

To support these actions, we have secured EU financial support through the project Caliper.
